Committed, tireless advocates for public education

We are tireless advocates of public education and ensuring schools get the resources they need. You can take a look at our current campaigns to see our main big picture focus areas.

About our advocacy activities

We meet regularly with representatives of the Department of Education (DoE), including the Chief Executive and the head of Human Resources. We have resurrected the Education Consultative Committee with representatives from DoE, the Office of the Commissioner for Public Employment (OCPE) and other unions.

In these meetings we discuss systemic trends and issues as well as individual member matters. Some current and ongoing topics:

  • Global Funding and the resultant increase in workloads
  • Deficits in budgets and lack of teacher support
  • The Indigenous Education Review and the threat to secondary provision in remote communities
  • Visible Learning and the extra meetings and workloads resulting from this
  • Direct Instruction regarding efficacy, suitability to individual contexts and evaluation.

We also defend teachers’ conditions and are aware of the impact of recent changes in the way some of our schools operate.

Representing you

We are also skilled in advocating for individual members regarding performance issues and conditions of service both with school leadership teams and with representatives of DoE. Such advocacy forms the majority of our work and we often do this together with AEU NT sub-branch representatives. We can liaise and advocate on your behalf with principals, HR consultants, OCPE, NT Worksafe and Fair Work.
