Background
Since 2021, EIAP’s Educators for Sustainable Development (E4SD) Programme has supported educators across the Asia-Pacific region in harnessing the power of education to address the climate crisis, advance climate justice, and promote a just transition to sustainable societies. Through initiatives such as the annual Educators Stand for Climate Justice and a Just Transition conferences, the Climate Justice Series webinars, the KLIMA Newsletter, and a growing body of research publications, the programme has strengthened the capacity of education unions to engage in climate action and advocacy.
As the first phase of the E4SD Programme comes to a close and preparations begin for its next phase, this webinar will explore emerging issues at the intersection of climate change and education. In particular, it will examine the environmental impacts of AI and data centres in Asia; and alternative economic approaches, including the wellbeing economy and degrowth, as pathways towards a just and sustainable future.
The discussions will help inform the Climate Caucus, which will take place on 12 October 2026 during the 10th EIAP Regional Conference in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Recognising that educators and students are on the frontlines of the climate crisis, education unions have a critical role to play in advancing systemic change and promoting equitable solutions. Building solidarity within and across unions is essential to meeting this challenge.
