About the Australian Education Union

In the NT, the AEU's membership of approximately 1600 is concentrated among school-based employees of the NT Department of Education, with a small number of members working in government offices, tertiary education and prisons. We represent all teachers in public education and have the right to represent many education support workers, such as assistant teachers and classroom assistants.

Our working conditions and entitlements have mostly been won by many decades of collective struggle. In an era of declining union membership in many industries, in education our voice remains strong because we maintain a high level of membership among teachers and educators. That gives teachers a stronger voice when dealing with management and governments. The AEU has not won all the battles we have taken part in, but governments and employers know that if they challenge teachers and educators, they are in for a fight!

The voice of public education

Local support with national backing

The AEU NT Branch is an affiliate of the Australian Education Union. Nationally we have more than 185,000 members across all states and territories, working as principals, teachers and allied educators in schools, TAFE institutes, Corrections Education, Adult Migrant Education Services, and early childhood education centres.

We support quality education for all

The AEU is proud to represent people who have the most important job in the country - educating people of all ages. We are proud to be advocates for a quality public education which is accessible to all Australians.

Supporting education across Australia

As one of the largest unions in Australia, the AEU has the capacity to campaign at every level to promote positive change. In recent years the AEU has been instrumental in pressuring both federal and state governments to implement the Gonski reforms to school funding.
