About the Australian Education Union
In the NT, the AEU's membership of approximately 1600 is concentrated among school-based employees of the NT Department of Education, with a small number of members working in government offices, tertiary education and prisons. We represent all teachers in public education and have the right to represent many education support workers, such as assistant teachers and classroom assistants.
Our working conditions and entitlements have mostly been won by many decades of collective struggle. In an era of declining union membership in many industries, in education our voice remains strong because we maintain a high level of membership among teachers and educators. That gives teachers a stronger voice when dealing with management and governments. The AEU has not won all the battles we have taken part in, but governments and employers know that if they challenge teachers and educators, they are in for a fight!
