Standing with Palestine: March with educators for justice and peace

On Sunday, 12 October, members are invited to march together with the AEU in the Nationwide March for Palestine, making visible the power of educators in this national call for justice. Our position and campaign actions on Palestine are led by grassroots members. We invite you to join the conversations regularly happening in our sub-branches and regional councils, which help to shape the union’s position and turn it into collective action.

Branch Conference Decision

At this year’s Branch Conference (Decision 68/2025), members affirmed that the AEU NT stands in solidarity with the people of Palestine and with educators and students whose right to education has been devastated by ongoing conflict. This position builds on the AEU Federal and ACTU statements on Gaza and peace education, which call for an immediate ceasefire, an end to military trade, and recognition of the role of education in building justice and peace, grounded in our commitment to safe, inclusive schools and respectful dialogue.

What the decision means for members

  • Union support for peaceful action. Members who take appropriate and peaceful action to advance Palestinian human rights will be supported by the union.

  • Support for educators’ professional judgment. Teachers who highlight Palestinian voices in their programs—consistent with the Australian Curriculum capabilities of ethical and intercultural understanding and critical/creative thinking, as well as the TRB Code of Ethics—can expect union backing when acting professionally and appropriately.

  • Working with the broader movement. We are aligned with the AEU Federal statement on Gaza and peace education and the ACTU statement on Gaza, both of which call for a permanent ceasefire, sanctions, and an end to economic and military ties that enable violations of international law.

A growing movement

On 24 August 2025, Australia witnessed the largest mobilisation for Palestine in our nation’s history. Tens of thousands marched, with union groups leading the way. Despite this show of solidarity, the Australian government has yet to take meaningful action.

That’s why unions across the country are now mobilising for the Nationwide March for Palestine on Sunday, 12 October, marking two years since the genocide in Gaza began. We encourage all members to march with us, join or organise groups, and ensure educators’ voices are visible in this national call for justice.

Why it matters for educators

Education International reports catastrophic harm to Palestine’s education system: schools and universities destroyed, thousands of teachers and students killed or injured, and widespread trauma. As a union of educators, we cannot ignore these realities. Solidarity and peace education are not optional; they are fundamental to our role.
