Professional Learning and TRB Renewal: What You Need to Know

The Teacher Registration Board (TRB) has recently notified a number of teachers that renewal of their registration requires demonstration of professional leaning and currency of practice. This is a requirement under legislation and members are strongly encouraged to comply. We have compiled advice for members on how to prepare their professional learning records. Union participation is professional learning when it’s structured, relevant to your role, and reflective.

What counts as professional learning

Professional learning is broader than many expect. The TRB’s framework recognises courses, conferences, and workshops, but also:

  • school-based PD days and coaching/mentoring (both giving and receiving)

  • cultural learning that deepens professional practice

  • collaborative projects, professional learning communities, and research or presentations

  • online modules and webinars

  • participation in professional associations or committees

The key is that activities are structured, purposeful, and connected to your practice.

How union activities fit

Union participation is also professional learning when undertaken reflectively. Examples include:

  • sub-branch meetings

  • rep training and duties

  • reference groups

  • Regional Council or Branch Executive

  • consultation meetings with the Department

We’ve prepared a guide to help you map these activities against the Standards, with reflection prompts and evidence suggestions. Guide – Union Activities PD Log

Using DET’s Professional Learning System (PLS)

As part of the Workload Reduction Action Plan, DET has updated the PLS so you can:

  • record Standards and reflections directly against DET-coordinated PD

  • upload your own activities to keep everything in one place

We encourage members to try the system and let us know of any issues.
